American Association History
The American Association was founded in 2003 as a Fall/Winter Strat-O-Matic Baseball League and has since then run with some bumps in the road but has persevered nevertheless. The core group of owners who have been in the league since its foundation is the true history of the league. I have been in many leagues over the past ten years plus, and have played SOM for going on 25 years, but I have never seen such a dedicated core group of owners who despite some of the bumps in the road are still as eager as they were on day 1 to play, draft, trade and participate. This is the best league I have ever been a part of bar none. Please take the time to get to know the league from our Web site, which also has grown over the years with my experience as a Web developer. Thanks for visiting the American Association.
Kindest regards,
Thomas Fischer
American Association Commissioner

Manager of the Year
Doug Crandall has been the manager of the Omaha Royals since the league began in 2003 and his team has amassed more wins than any other in league history, but 2007 was a little different as his team won a franchise record 119 times winning the Central Division by 32 games. Only two other teams in league history have put away the second place team in their division by more than 30 games. Those teams were the 2004 Eureka Crabs and the 2005 Regina Cyclones who won 123 games and 118 games respectively. |
Jeff Hammerlund joined the league in 2005 and guided his Algonquin Indians through a miserable 50 win season. His team just didn't have a ton of talent added to the fact that the division was a fairly tough one. But just like the phoenix, he rose from the ashes to produce one of the best comebacks in league history turning it around in 2006 to win 94 games and finish only 3 games behind division winning Philadelphia. Jeff's turn around of 44 games has earned him the 2006 Manager of the Year. |
Brian Berglund, the owner of the North Shore Lobsters, took over a team in 2005 that had not faired terribly well in its first two seasons winning only 131 games in their first two seasons as the Charleston Chemists. After Brian took over the franchise and moved them to Long Island he made some key moves and drafted wisely to take his team to the playoffs as the Atlantic Division Champions in 2005. This strong turn around led by the owner is the reason Brian has been named Manager of the Year. |
Dan Johnson, the owner of the Eureka Crabs, did not fair so well in his first season winning only 50 games. With a tremendous draft in both the first and second AABL seasons Dan put together a terrific squad of players and improved his teams fortunes. In 2004 the Crabs won a league record 123 games and increased his win total by 73 games from 2003 to 2004. Despite losing in the 2004 playoffs the success of the team is attributed to Dan as the 2004 Manager of the year. |
Matt Hunt, the owner of the Lake St. Louis Lice, began the inaugural 2003 AABL Season by going 1-14. After getting off to such a terrible start Matt did not despair but rather put together some nice winning streaks to improve his record. Posting a 85-77 final record, the Lice, finished the season 84-63 in their final 147 games. Making the playoffs in the first season and overcoming a poor start earned Matt recognition as the 2003 Manager of the year. |
